Bengkung Belly Binding
Almost exactly two years ago this November, I added on my latest postpartum service, Bengkung Belly Bind Session through my training with Salwa Salim of The Birth Matron.
Bengkung Belly Binding is a great tool to add on to your postpartum recovery plan. During my Bengkung Belly Binding Session, I spend time using warming tools to bring warmth and comfort touch to your lower belly and back, followed by teaching you how to wear your traditional bengkung belly bind. We use a more modern version of the bengkung belly bind that Salwa of The Birth Matron provides her trained Belly Matrons with. These binds are beautiful and much easier to use than the classic long fabric knotted technique (bengkung ikat) on an individual basis for a new mother in her postpartum.
Compared to the Moroccan kourziya that is used to wrap the hips and bring warmth into the womb in the postpartum period, the Malay style Bengkung Belly Bind will stay on your body more stably throughout the day, and will feel like a supportive hug. The goals behind this type of postpartum care are:
- To help you warm up your core to support womb healing and postpartum digestion
- Help remind your organs and muscles of where they were pre-pregnancy
- Help remove excess air and space
- Help you maintain a better posture, especially if you are carrying a newborn/baby-feeding all day
- Help you feel hugged.
- Help give your body the positive sensation of counter-pressure that feels so good on the hips and waist after everything that pregnancy and birth are.
